Chapter Twenty-Four

DONNA

I’m back in the glasshouse and I’ll admit that it was nice to see Joe. Tinged with melancholy, yes. But nice.

What do I know? It seems that Gabby has a secret that Joe’s in on (I thought that dog collar/zip tie thing was a bit dodgy) and Cat is shagging Jase Clarkson. She must be nuts. He’s a complete player. It’s bound to end in tears. Pound to a pinch of salt that Cat will be sitting in this glasshouse sobbing her heart out inside a month – mark me! Anyhow, it’s 10pm and I’m trying to catch up on a whole heap of jobs so that my business doesn’t go under. Also, there’s no getting away from it: Joe Enys is still the loveliest man in the county, and I need to wash him from my mind before I go to bed. What’s a girl to do?

Forget him. That’s what.

My phone pings. Ah, lovely. My stalker/chief threatener is back. Let’s see what delights he’s got for me this time… Ooh, it starts with a quote:

“But sometimes I think sailors have an extra sense that tells them when they are in danger. Sometimes I think evil is a tangible thing…with wave lengths, just as sound and light have.” Author – Richard Connell. Book – The Most Dangerous Game. Character – General Zaroff

BEWARE, DONNA NIGHTSHADE. EVIL IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. BACK OFF, OR ELSE.
